A Comfort-able Weekend: Hill Country Distillers, Newsom Vineyards, and Firehouse Fare.

If you’ve been keeping up with my Instagram stories you’ll know that this past weekend I decided to venture a little further up into the Hill Country to explore some of the tastes of Comfort, TX. I woke my boyfriend up (too early for his liking) and dragged him out of the house so that we could make our short migration 20 minutes up to Comfort. Since I was making him get up early on a weekend morning I wanted to take him somewhere he would enjoy, so we headed straight to Hill Country Distillers.

We pulled up and found plenty of parking available and wandered inside of the Hill Country Distillers tasting room. We waited only a moment and were assisted by one of the friendly bar staff. Tastings are free and once you are done you are able to go into the next room and purchase a mixed drink featuring the spirits you just experienced. Our tasting went from the highest proof to the lowest, fair warning the first one packs a punch!

I can honestly say there is not one that I did not like but I have to say that my absolute favorite was the Dulce a coffee liqueur. I decided to go with the staff recommendation and order a Bushwacker which is aptly described as an adult milkshake.. and also ordered a few others as well.

I think it will go perfectly in my Saturday morning coffee to give me a little extra pep-in-my-step for the weekend! I learned that they are pet friendly as well and if your furry friend needs a break, they even have a small fenced in kennel area outside for your pooch!

Once we finished our drinks and purchased a branded copper mug (for use later), we wandered outside and grabbed some grub at the Firehouse Fare food truck stationed just outside the tasting room. I ordered the chicken sandwich and sat down to enjoy the nice weather.

Once I was no longer in a food coma from my sandwich I went next door to the Newsom Vineyards tasting room.

Tastings are $5 per person and offer a selection of 4 different wines. My favorite was their 2015 Orange Muscat and I purchased two bottles which I intend to enjoy over the next week or two.

If you are looking for a great date night/afternoon activity or a girls day out I highly recommend checking out the Comfort area your significant other and experience, some great food, wine, and liquor!

Something to Note:

*You cannot purchase bottles at Hill Country Distillers on Sundays (darn those pesky Texas laws!) but you CAN still purchase individual drinks at their bar.

Jam and Toast Brunch at The Rustic San Antonio

I finally had the chance to check out The Rustic this morning. My SO and I headed down to The Rim at La Canterra to get out brunch on at The Rustic’s Jam and Toast Brunch.

Several waitstaff greatest us upon our arrival and when we were seated Mercy our waitress gave us the lowdown on the menu and told me about the amazing Pumpkin Spice Margarita, that of course you know I had to try!

The best part about brunch at The Rustic is that you you don’t have to settle for sweet or savory, you get to try a little bit of everything… and everything is to die for!

Their bacon is probably the best I’ve ever had and may very well change your life!

The Rustic’s Jam and Toast Brunch runs on Saturdays and Sundays from 10-2 with live music starting at 12:30. If you are member of the military, or are a first responder you also get 25% (breakfast, lunch, and dinner).

The Rustic is certainly the epitome of Texas chic and might just be my new go-to brunch spot in town!

Boerne Fourth of July

Happy Independence Day!

The Fourth of  July means Apple pie, hot dogs, and fireworks… or if you happen to be in South Texas margaritas, tacos, and fireworks!

I decided to catch the amazing fireworks show put on in Boerne this 4th of July.

With the heat index being 102 degrees I wanted to stay in the air conditioning so we headed to Fuzzy’s Tacos so that we could catch the show, listen to live music, and stay cool. There may also have been the ulterior motive of getting an  amazing Red, White, and Blue Margarita!

As the light started to fade, the first fireworks went up and came gleaming back down in colorful sparkles. It was a shorter celebration than I usually have but still an amazing night in the Hill Country!

Boerne Brunch: La Cascada at Tapatio Springs

Tucked back in the hills of Boerne, Texas is the picturesque golf resort and spa Tapatio Springs. Though I do not golf, my hand-eye coordination is zero, I have wanted to explore the area for some time. So when I found out about the hotel’s restaurant I decided to try it our for the most important meal of the day. Brunch.

I decided to drag my boyfriend along with me, who despite living in the Boerne area his whole life, had never been to the resort. We hopped into the 69 Chevy pickup (his  favorite vehicle to drive of late) and headed deeper into the Hill Country.

We had a beautiful drive into the resort, and since it is fall leaves were starting to change.Views like this is why fall is my favorite time of year.

Once we got to the restaurant we were seated immediately right by the large window overlooking the golf course.

After a good 10 minutes of perusing the menu and being indecisive I finally settled on the Shrimp and Crab Quiche with fresh fruit.

I tried to snag a picture of his Hill Country Breakfast before he started but he was too quick for me and had already started digging in!

Our meal complete we headed outside to briefly poke around the gold course. We headed for a fire pit I had been eyeing out the window to enjoy the fresh air.

This was one of the most hearty and relaxing brunches I have had for quite some time. I highly recommend talking the drive out to Tapatio Springs and having your next brunch at La Cascada.

Saturday Morning Meals

Like so many other women on the go, I neglect having  breakfast in the morning, instead substituting with additional cups of coffee while getting ready in the morning. I just do not have the time/ do not want to wake up even earlier to make myself breakfast. With this in mind I think it is easy to see why Saturday morning is my moment to slow down, sit in my pj’s, and relax with a cup of coffee and a real meal.

Lately my go to breakfast meal of choice has essentially just to put lox on everything. For those of you that don’t know what lox is, it is smoked salmon, and possibly the most delicious thing on this planet.

Yesterday morning I sat down, poured my coffee into my favorite mug from Hotel Havana (review on this location coming soon!), and ate fried eggs and lox on toast. I binge watched the new series The Crown on Netflix, and had an amazing lazy Saturday morning.

Restaurant Review: Little Gretel Brunch

This morning I got up a little later than normal and was in a frantic rush to get ready… brunch time was almost over! Fortunately I discovered that one of the local restaurants served brunch until 3 PM in Sundays! My Sunday brunch was saved! So I was able to have a leisurely Sunday brunch at Little Gretel in Boerne, Texas. Located on River Road, just off Main Street this Czech restaurant fits right into the quaint old German town. It offers traditional Czech meals as well as offering twists on traditional brunch food.

This morning I treated myself to the Lox Benedict. Now I know the delicious smoked salmon is not everyones ideal breakfast food but I cannot get enough of it!

Latte Art: #TNTSATX

Last night I attended the one year anniversary of San Antonio’s Thursday Night Throwdown.  Last night the competition was held at Merit Roasting Co. (the location changes every month), and it was packed.

Everyone was there to watch these local artists face-off and work their magic and create beautiful delicate designs on their caffeinated canvas. But while the competition in the Latte Art SA world was fierce, it any trash talking was all in good fun.

I attended the event with several coworkers and Rylie, the ridgeless Rhodesian Ridgeback (follow him on Instagram @rylie_the_rhodie).

Latte Warriors & Rylie

This will no doubt become a monthly tradition for me. It is a great way to spend a fun inexpensive night out.#TNTSATX  is the Thursday of the month. There is a suggested donation of $5 and proceeds from the event go to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas.

Luke’s Diner / White Elephant Coffee Co. AKA : The Gilmore Girls Experience.

This is a longer post. Warning in advance.

If you grew up in the early 200o’s you are probably well aware of the TV Show Gilmore Girls. If you are also a fan like myself you no doubt were extremely excited when you heard about the planned 4 episode reboot on Netflix you were practically giddy. So when I heard that Netfilx was going to be doing Luke’s Diner popups all over the country on the 16th anniversary of the show I knew I had to be there.

Texas had several cities participating, but San Antonio only had one location that was being converted into Luke’s Diner, White Elephant Coffee Co. in the South Town area. It seemed simple enough, I would get up early, wait in line, and be at work early with a Luke’s coffee cup.

Cue October 5th 2016, I get up to my alarm at 5 am drag myself out of bed, slap on a face, get in my vehicle and drive to South Town. I’m thinking to myself I’ll be there early and be near the front of the line… this was not the case. I got there and the line was wrapped around the building almost reaching the front entrance. I was luck enough to pull into a spot someone was leaving and immediately got into line. It was still dark outside at this point and I had about two hours until I had to be at work. I waited patiently in line chit chatting with others in line with me and we were having a great time discussing our theories for what the reboot would bring. Suddenly my alarm went off on my phone 8:15… you have to leave and go to work with no Luke’s cup. I was no where near the front of the line (which had only moved about 200 feet total), so I had to leave and go to work empty handed. I took a quick snap of the front door with the Luke’s sign before leaving to go back to work.

Now I work at an incredible place with possibly the most amazing coworkers and supervisors on the planet. My boss came in and asked if I had secured the Luke’s cup I had talked her ear off the day before. I told her no and she told me to go back to Luke’s! I raced back over and secured a new place in the growing line.

better-sign

It was now 10:15 A.M. Just after 11 an employee came out to tell us that all of the Gilmore Girls cups had been given out but that there were still sleeves with the Luke’s branded logo to be given out. I thought ‘okay no problem that the best part anyway. Cue an HOUR later and I have finally reached the front door and reached the interior, they run out of sleeves.

(Me before I heard the tragic No More Cup News.)

I then had a desperate moment… I asked the woman in front of me if I could take a picture with her Luke’s cup and bless her she said sure of course! Several other people who had received the coveted item who were on there way out offered their cups to others who wanted to take their own snaps of the Instagram worthy piece.

I think that that moment showed the real spirit of the event, fans assisting other fans, just like the citizens of Stars Hollow would. Everyone was so happy to be there and among other kindred spirits that it didn’t matter if the actually had the cup in hand, we were all there for the experience of being with other people like us. Everyone could still snap photos of the NO CELLPHONES sign and the employees in their Luke’s attire (complete with plaid shirts) and be perfectly pleased.

My boss texted to check in on my progress and I let her know that I would be back on my was sans coffee cup. When I arrived back at my desk my coworkers had bestowed upon me their won version of the Luke’s Diner experience; sticking a Luke’s logo to my Starbucks cup and even a NO CELLPHONES sign!!!

other-cup

So am I disappointed that I didn’t get to get the Luke’s Coffee Cup? Not really. I met amazing people, had a good time, and took some fun photos. I feel that the comradery displayed by everyone at the event made everyone feel like they had the full Stars Hollow experience; the cup of coffee is just the symbol, but the spirit is what it is all about.

Also townofstarshollow.org is a thing… and it is epic.

Bakery Lorraine

One of the staple restaurants at the Pearl Brewery is Bakery Lorraine. This has been a regular haunt of mine for quite several years now. They have one of my favorite treats, French macarons. When I first moved to the San Antonio area it was impossible to find these delightful little cookies. So naturally when I found out about Bakery Lorraine I rushed over to sample them. The bakery has quickly become a local hotspot.

Now I go in for the occasional macaron, but mostly I go for the brunch. Is it a basic girl thing to do? Yes. Do I care? Nope.

Today is Bakery Lorraine’s 5th birthday. They will be giving out birthday cake macarons, while provisions hold. If you are in the area swing by and grab yourself a tasty treat!
